Abstract

This study aimed to describe the factors associated with burnout syndrome among healthcare professionals. An integrative literature review was conducted, and articles retrieved through the secondary databases Virtual Health Library, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Scientific Electronic Library Online, and Online System for Searching and Analyzing Medical Literature were analyzed using the descriptors burnout syndrome, occupational stress, stress, and healthcare professional. The factors associated with burnout syndrome among professionals are multifaceted, encompassing individual, interpersonal, and organizational dimensions. At the individual level, characteristics such as age, sex, marital status, and coping strategies can influence susceptibility. On the interpersonal level, social support and relationships with colleagues and superiors play a crucial role. However, organizational factors are often cited as the most significant predictors. These include excessive workload, lack of autonomy and control over work, low recognition, absence of organizational justice, and the perception of a misalignment of values between the individual and the institution. Efforts from managers are necessary to protect professionals against burnout syndrome in the workplace.
