Abstract

The present study aimed to understand the factors associated with medication adherence among patients diagnosed with systemic arterial hypertension. An integrative literature review was conducted, analyzing articles retrieved through the secondary databases Virtual Health Library, Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature, Scientific Electronic Library Online, and Online System for Medical Literature Search and Analysis using the descriptors medication adherence, hypertension, and interventions for medication adherence. The studies indicate that adherence does not depend solely on the patient’s will, but on a triad of factors, which include individual factors such as age, education, beliefs about the disease, and health literacy; therapeutic factors, such as the number of pills (polypharmacy), side effects, and cost; and health system factors, such as the relationship with the healthcare team, access to medications, and social support. The results of this study allow us to conclude that medication adherence among patients with systemic arterial hypertension is a multifactorial phenomenon and cannot be attributed solely to the patient’s will.
