THE IMPORTANCE OF NURSING TRIAGE IN PATIENT ADMISSION AT CAPS (PSYCHOSOCIAL CARE CENTERS)

Abstract

Nursing triage constitutes a fundamental stage in the reception of patients in Psychosocial Care Centers (CAPS), playing a strategic role in care organization, risk prioritization, and multiprofessional integration. The initial assessment performed by the nurse allows for the identification of clinical and psychosocial needs, establishment of care flows, reduction of improvisation, and assurance of safety and continuity of care. Furthermore, it contributes to building the therapeutic bond, promoting humanized reception, patient engagement in interventions, and treatment adherence. Studies indicate that structured triage enhances communication among professionals, provides individualized guidance, integrates resources, and strengthens the quality of mental health care. However, challenges such as work overload, high staff turnover, lack of standardization, and resource limitations still affect the effectiveness of this practice. Therefore, the consolidation of triage depends on clear protocols, continuous staff training, and institutional commitment, promoting patient-centered and safe care.
