Abstract
This chapter analyzes the transformative role of the Family Health Strategy (ESF) and the incorporation of Integrative and Complementary Health Practices (PICS) as instruments for strengthening primary care within the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). It highlights that the ESF, successor to the Family Health Program (PSF), constitutes a public policy for reorienting the care model, centered on promotion, prevention, and comprehensive care through multidisciplinary teams and community engagement. PICS, regulated by the National Policy on Integrative and Complementary Practices, complement biomedical treatment, stimulating the physical, emotional, and social balance of the individual. The text presents the success story of the Oca Community Health Project in Fortaleza (CE), which integrates alternative therapies such as Reiki, massage therapy, and discussion groups into healthcare, reinforcing humanization and welcoming within the SUS. Despite the progress, challenges in management, financing, and professional qualification persist, impacting the sustainability of the actions. It is concluded that the integration between Family Health Strategy (ESF) and Integrative and Complementary Practices (PICS) strengthens the humanization of care and reaffirms the commitment of the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) to universality, equity, and comprehensiveness in health care.
