Abstract

The present study aimed to understand the impact of spirituality and religiosity on the treatment of chronic diseases. An integrative literature review was conducted, analyzing articles retrieved from the secondary databases Virtual Health Library, Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences, Scientific Electronic Library Online, and Online System for Search and Analysis of Medical Literature using the descriptors spirituality; religiosity; and chronic disease. Spirituality/religiosity (S/R) is consistently associated with better coping and resilience, providing a system of meaning and purpose that allows patients greater acceptance and management of suffering and the limitations imposed by chronic illness, improvement in psychological outcomes, statistically significant reductions in anxiety, depression, and stress levels, functioning as a buffer against the emotional impact of the disease, greater quality of life. Spiritual well-being is directly correlated with higher physical and mental quality of life scores, especially in palliative care contexts and advanced illnesses, as well as therapeutic adherence. It is recommended that healthcare professionals receive training to conduct a spiritual assessment and incorporate spiritual support as a validated component of therapy in chronic diseases.
