THE ROLE OF NURSES IN THE FAMILY HEALTH STRATEGY: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS BASED ON ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE IN THE FIELD – EXPERIENCE REPORT

Abstract

The Family Health Strategy constitutes the main model for reorganizing Primary Health Care in Brazil, with the nurse as a central figure who articulates clinical care, team management, and community engagement. This article presents an account of the experience lived by 5 nursing students during their curricular internship in a Family Health Unit, aiming to reflect on the role of the nurse in this context, the dynamics of teamwork, the importance of home visits, and the ethical challenges encountered in the territory. The methodology was based on participant observation, an interview with the unit's nurse, and monitoring of home visits and team meetings. The results highlighted the multiplicity of functions assumed by the nurse, who reconciles care and management activities with sensitivity and organization. The relevance of home visits as a tool for connecting with the reality of families was emphasized, as well as the fundamental role of Community Health Agents as a link between the unit and the community. Challenges related to social prejudice in accessing health services were identified, requiring an ethical and welcoming approach from the team. The experience reaffirmed the importance of integrated multidisciplinary work and humanized care as pillars of the Family Health Strategy.
