Abstract

Surgical site infection (SSI) is an important postoperative complication associated with morbidity, readmission, increased healthcare costs and further interventions. Objective: to discuss risk factors, prevention, surveillance criteria, diagnosis and treatment principles. Methods: a descriptive and exploratory narrative review based on the authors’ previously collected references and supplemented with recent institutional recommendations and guidelines. Results and discussion: prevention includes procedure-specific antimicrobial prophylaxis, skin antisepsis, normothermia, glycemic management and sound surgical technique. Classification into superficial incisional, deep incisional and organ/space SSI guides surveillance and assessment. Treatment is tailored to depth and severity and may involve drainage, debridement, source control and systemic antibiotics when indicated. Conclusion: perioperative protocols, early recognition and antimicrobial stewardship are essential to reduce complications and bacterial resistance
