PREVENTION OF PHLEBITIS RELATED TO THE USE OF PERIPHERAL VENOUS CATHETERS: INTERVENTIONS BASED ON THE LITERATURE

Abstract

Phlebitis, an inflammation of the venous wall commonly associated with the use of peripheral venous catheters (PVC), remains one of the most frequent complications of intravenous therapy, despite widespread dissemination of preventive protocols and nursing training. This condition compromises patient comfort and safety and may progress to more serious complications such as thrombophlebitis or systemic infection. The high incidence of phlebitis, even with preventive measures implemented, highlights the need for continuous review of clinical practices, professional training, and adoption of evidence-based protocols. Therefore, this study aimed to identify, through a literature review, the main preventive measures to minimize the incidence of phlebitis associated with PVC use in hospital inpatient units, focusing on strengthening patient safety and promoting safe and effective nursing practices. This qualitative, descriptive study analyzed scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025, sourced from SciELO, PubMed, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases. Data collection used keyword descriptors, and inclusion criteria considered full-text articles in Portuguese that directly addressed prevention, assessment, or treatment of phlebitis related to PVC. Results were organized into four thematic axes: risk factors, clinical assessment, prevention strategies, and the role of the nursing team. It is concluded that reducing phlebitis requires a multifactorial approach, including continuous staff training, standardized use of assessment scales, strict adherence to best nursing practices, and strategic actions by the Hospital Infection Control Service. Such measures are essential to ensure safer, more effective, and humanized care.
